SUBWAY GATEWAY
National Science and Technology Museum - kAOHSIUNG cITY, Taiwan (2017)
A cellular canopy above, a set of overlapping arches below, the gateway structure inspires a moment to slow down in the city. The experience it offers is non-linear and surprising, based on discovering and attempting to understand the unknown. What starts as a visual icon and folly ends up being an opportunity to lose oneself in wonder. From afar the piece acts a vibrant signal. Up close, it is a tectonic experience. Circling the piece, no view ever repeats itself. It can be entered through multiple points, the result of spheres intersecting one another to create structure. The network of the piece is an image of connectivity in today’s culture. It is the result of a rigorously digital process, from design to fabrication down to the process of its coloration. Drawing upon inspiration from the nearby the National Science and Technology Museum, the piece offers on one hand a tour de force of technology, and on the other a pleasant and fun social experience. Go ahead inside, and see if an impromptu game of “hide-and-seek” is not tempting...
