Commissioned by Google, The Orb is a monumental pavilion designed by Marc Fornes and THEVERYMANY, serving as a centerpiece in the public plaza of Google's Charleston East Campus. This 10-meter-tall, ultra-thin aluminum structure stands as a beacon of interaction and innovation, embodying the spirit of creativity and play that defines Google’s work culture.

Crafted from 6,441 individual aluminum components and connected by over 217,000 rivets, The Orb is a self-supported shell structure, utilizing cutting-edge computational design techniques to create its spherical, doubly curved form. The structure’s organic, flowing shape contrasts and complements the surrounding architecture, notably the light-filled Charleston East building. Both forms share a sense of lightness and openness, though The Orb distinguishes itself as an experiential landmark—inviting employees, visitors, and the public to gather, explore, and engage.

Its surface, made from 3mm aluminum panels, is punctuated by a pattern of openings that allow light to filter through during the day, creating a dappled effect on the ground below. By night, the structure transforms into a glowing sculpture, its presence magnified by the interplay of light and shadow, establishing it as a dynamic feature that evolves with time and environment.

As both a functional outdoor room and an art installation, The Orb encourages diverse interactions—from casual meetups to moments of personal reflection. It anchors the plaza, offering a space for curiosity and exploration at the intersection of Google’s campus and public space. With its flowing geometry and computationally generated form, The Orb merges art, architecture, and innovation, aligning with Google’s forward-thinking ethos while enriching the urban fabric of Mountain View.
