PROTOTYPICAL ARCHITECTURES FOR UNLIKELY FUTURES

MARC FORNES ARCHITECTE DPLG is Principal of THEVERYMANY. Marc is a fine connoisseur in computer science, situating himself at the forefront of computational design over the last 15 years, as well as the digital prototyping of the these large-scale, highly-organic self-supporting structures.

Some of those prototypical architectures have also been acquired and displayed as part of the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the FRAC Centre (Orleans, FR), the CNAP and private collections. He has exhibited work at the Guggenheim (Contemplating the Void), GGG Art Basel Miami, Art Paris and sold at auction at Phillips De Pury.

Marc is a TED Fellow. He has been a speaker at many events and institutions including the ArchiLab symposium 2013 and MoMA MIND 08. In 2012 he was the recipient of an artist residency at the Atelier Calder (FR) and his studio was awarded the New Practices New York 2012 by the American Institute of Architects and the Architectural League Prize 2013. His architectural work for Louis Vuitton is the recipient of the A+ Jury Award in the Pop Up category.

Together with Francois Roche, Marc co-launched “(n)Certainties”, a graduate studio at Columbia University (NYC) with visiting semesters at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles) and at Die Angewandte (Vienna). He has also taught at University of Michigan,  Princeton and a studio with Patrik Schumacher at Harvard GSD.

In 2007 Marc designed and launched www.scriptedbypurpose.net, the first exhibition exclusively focusing on scripted processes within design, and curated in 2008 the European section for the Architecture Biennale in Beijing.

Marc’s professional work experience in France, the UK and the US includes SOM, Ross Lovegrove and ZAHA HADID Architects. At ZAHA HADID Architects Marc was Project Architect for an experimental Mediateque in Pau, France. During his three years on this project he directed an extensive material research and geometrical development for what would have been the largest self-supported carbon fiber shell to date.

In 2004 he graduated with a Master of Architecture and Urbanism from the Design Research Lab of the Architectural Association in London after previously studying in France and Sweden (KTH).

MARC FORNES / THEVERYMANY is an art and architecture studio specializing in the intersection of unique spatial experience and ultra-thin lightweight structures.

The design research of the studio is deeply rooted in the development of computational protocols and means of digital fabrication. Over the last ten years, the studio has invented and further developed ‘Structural Stripes,’ a building system by which custom-designed parts form complex, self-supporting curvilinear surfaces.

Applying their unique approach to design, engineering and construction, the studio has designed and built a collection of ‘Crawling Assemblies’ across United States, Canada and Europe  -- fantastical structures at a scale between art and architecture, and which unify surface, structure and spatial experience into a single system. Calling to mind different organic references depending on viewer, the undulating, often brightly-colored structures craft unique spaces that manipulate light and our typical understanding of depth.
