PREMISE:

Taking on Patrik’s (Schumacher) challenge, this proposal is THEVERYMANY’s take on Felix Candela’s body of research on hyperbolic paraboloid surfaces (commonly known as Hypar). The project composed of five hypar surfaces (three plus two as edge details), is made from two directional lattices of flat members. The why of such an exploration? Since such a tight budget on that project, the proposal strategize on the inherent property of hypar surfaces and the fact that they can be built only out of straight segments, therefore dramatically increasing the efficiency of nesting – while allowing variation on density and moire pattern…

PROBLEMATIC:

Candela is most famous for his 1.5″ thick concrete shell, super thin structures as per architecture standard. Yet hypar surfaces are dramatically lacking of double curvature in some areas (the sides at the bottom are very flat!), therefore far less efficient within THEVERYMANY’s thin structural surface paradigm, highly relying on tight radius and constantly varying degree of double curvature.

DEVELOPMENT IN PROGRESS:

After tests/trials of MANY options there is finally some hope toward an entirely self-supported structure in the competition spirit…
